I have noticed that the air plants with thin wispy leaves are harder to keep hydrated than the leaves that are wider and fleshier. If you have a wispy leaf plant such as Juncea or Tenufolia, you might consider soaking significantly longer than you would Velutina or Recurifolia.
Also misting to maintain higher humidity is important for the thin leaves. I have found that you can actually look at your plant and tell that it needs water.
